Sandanie Ambalangodage, 17,of Smithfield, R.I., a senior at Lincoln School in Providence, raised money inboth the United States and Sri Lanka to buy toys, towels, mosquito nets andlife-saving injections for young cancer patients at a hospital in Sri Lanka. 
Nicholas Lowinger, 14, ofCranston, R.I., a volunteer with Serve Rhode Island and an eighth-grader atWheeler School in Providence, started the "Gotta Have SoleFoundation," which has donated new shoes to more than 1,000 homeless andneedy children.

Sandanie and Nicholas were honored on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 in the State Room at the RI State House in a ceremony with Prudential, United Way and Serve Rhode Island representatives and families of the awardees.  Stephen Hourahan of the Governor's Office issued the citations and Volunteer Week proclamation on behalf of Governor Chafee who was visiting RI troops in Afghanistan.
