Today, Thursday, May 19th Serve Rhode Island has published "Stories of Service - Reflections From 2010-2011 RI AmeriCorps Members" capturing images and words experienced by some of Rhode Island's 500 AmeriCorps members in their daily work. The stories of 31 AmeriCorps members are shared in a 6-minute VIDEO or can be read in their entirety on SRI's WEBSITE.

Stories of Service is part of RI's celebration of service during National AmeriCorps Week, May 14-21. This week provides opportunities across the U.S. for AmeriCorps members, alums, grantees, program partners, and friends to demonstrate AmeriCorps' impact on critical issues, bring more Americans into service, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible. 

About AmeriCorps in RI: Serve Rhode Island (SRI) administers $3.1 million in AmeriCorps funding for 9 community programs, engaging the services of 259 individual AmeriCorps volunteers serving in 169 different non-profits, schools and universities in the state. Almost half (44%) of this year’s volunteers are from states outside of Rhode Island, from nearly every state. In addition to SRI’s grantees, 7 other national organizations contribute another 258 members bringing the state total to 517 individuals who dedicating a year of service in Rhode Island schools and community organizations. AmeriCorps volunteers receive a stipend and education award for their year of service. In Rhode Island, AmeriCorps volunteers provide teaching and enrichment service in public school during and after school, environmental education and support for human services. 

Since its inception in 1994, Serve Rhode Island has brought more than 35 million dollars in federal funds to RI nonprofits and government agencies, providing 3,511 AmeriCorps volunteers who gave 4.1 million hours of service for hundreds of non-profit educational and community development programs.
