VOLUNTEERS FROM SERVE RHODE ISLAND IN THE NEWS!
VOLUNTEERS have made a huge difference in helping people impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Over 2100 volunteers have registered to help out and of that group 769 volunteers have been deployed so far in numerous capacities from answering phones to debris clean up. Of the 769 deployed, 707 volunteers worked cleaning up debris for 147 homeowners and 24 Westerly businesses who's properties were devastated by the storm. Clean up efforts continue with volunteer teams still hard at work removing ruined appliances, furniture, household items, and cutting up fallen trees and branches.
Area businesses contributed volunteers and resources to fuel the effort: Washington Trust provided volunteers and funding for the school bus to shuttle volunteers from Rotary Park to the impacted neighborhood. Benny's suppled trash bags and work gloves. Restaurants including, Applebee's, Bess Eaton Donuts, Coldstone Creamery, Dominos Pizza, Dunkin Donuts, Dunn's Corner Market, Midway Pizza, Monroe Dairy, Pepsi, B. Pinelli's, Subway, Vetranos Pizza, Villa Bed and Breakfast, Vittorias and Walmart have contributed food and drinks and dozens of other area residents dropped off baked goods and food throughout the clean up effort. The Jonnycake Center of Westerly provided a box truck for securing supplies and the Salvation Army supplied breakfast and lunch to volunteers.
Serve Rhode Island, The Misquamicut Business Association and Greater Westerly Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce continue to coordinate Hurricane Sandy clean up and recovery efforts which is predicted to continue through the spring.
