EVENT UPDATE: 240 attend Annual MLK Day Institute

01/23/13
On Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 21, 2013, a record number of 240 AmeriCorps members attended the 4th annual MLK DAY Institute held at Providence College.  Ray Rickman, local businessman, historian and civil rights leader, delivered a keynote address, which was followed by 90-minute discussion breakout groups.  At 11:30 AM, all reconvened to share the results of their group's task to identify an issue of inequality and injustice and create some action steps following the Kingian six steps of nonviolent social change.  Captured by Serve Rhode Island is a three-part series of YouTube videos:
Part I:  Introductions & Keynotes (to be uploaded)

About SRI's MLK Day Institute:  Serve Rhode Island began the MLK Day Institute in 2010 to offer an alternative to the narrow definition of “service” that typically has groups of volunteers working on physical improvements in schools, community agencies with painting, cleaning and other direct services to the community on MLK Day.  As part of their year of service, AmeriCorps members provide direct serve the community every day. The Institute on the MLK holiday allows AmeriCorps members an opportunity to learn and study the life of Dr. King, reflect on their own service work, and explore ways to apply his teachings to their daily experience in the Rhode Island community.
