The Choose Peace AmeriCorps Members commit to 10 months of service, providing nonviolence training to 1000 economically disadvantaged students in schools throughout Rhode Island. ISPN trains Members on how to live and teach the philosophy of Kingian Nonviolence. We assign AmeriCorps Members to a team and place them at one of ISPN’s partner schools.
Members conduct nonviolence trainings, develop nonviolence programming, mediate student conflicts, and participate in community events and meetings at their assigned schools. Members work to establish relationships with school staff, parents, and key stakeholders in an effort to provide a more thorough support system for students.
How to Apply
The mission of the Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence is to teach, by word and example, the principles and practices of nonviolence, and to foster a community that addresses potentially violent situations with nonviolent solutions. We work to build Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s ideal of the nonviolent Beloved Community.
ISPN has helped to significantly lower violence in the City of Providence and other cities in the state, while increasing the services being offered to victims of violence throughout the State of Rhode Island.
