National Service Impact

On Monday, March 27th, Senator Whitehouse, Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, Providence Schools Superintendent Chris Maher, Serve Rhode Island and RI AmeriCorps programs met at Roger Williams Middle School to discuss the state of AmeriCorps and the importance of national service for education.

If the national AmeriCorps budget is eliminated under the President's proposed federal budget, Rhode Island will lose more than $5 million and 3,000 students will not receive attendance, reading, and math support.  AmeriCorps in Rhode Island is part of a national network that involves more than 80,000 Americans each year in service projects in education, the environment, public safety and other areas.
