2018 MLK Day of Service
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is known as "a day on". Service never sleeps and on Martin Luther King Jr. Day AmeriCorps member across Rhode Island take pride in serving another day. On Monday, January 15th, over 40 members from Teach for America, Providence After School Alliance, and AmeriCorps VISTA members helped to revitalize Nathanael Greene Middle School by painting what were dark and dismal hallways and turning them into brightened spaces.
Coretta Scott King once said, "Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education and tribute, but above all a day of service...We call you to commemorate this Holiday by making your personal commitment to serve humanity with the vibrant spirit of unconditional love that was his greatest strength, and which empowered all of the great victories of his leadership. And with our hearts open to this spirit of unconditional love, we can indeed achieve the Beloved Community of Martin Luther King, Jr.’s dream."
AmeriCorps members welcomed both Providence Public Schools Superintendent, Christopher Maher, and Rhode Island Senator, Jack Reed to the school to tour the changes being made throughout the school.
Thank you to everyone who served on MLK Day and to those who honored the life of a man seeking justice, compassion, and unconditional love for all of humanity.
